About The Artist

Born in 1928 San Francisco into a poor family, both of Leon's parents had jobs, with his father making hats and his mother training Leon to become a great pianist. All of the practice and hard work was to pay off, as he had begun training and practicing at the young age of 4, but gave his first performance at the age of eight and worked his way up in the following years until he played with the New York Philharmonic at the age of sixteen. At that age he was studying under Pierre Monteux, a master musician who at one point had called Fleisher "the pianist find of the century". He later took a contract with Columbia Masterworks and became well known for his interpretations of work by famous musicians while also showcasing his own music. All was going well until he lost the use of his right hand in the 1960's, but continued playing left-handed and conducting. However, it was in the early 2000's that he regained the use of his hand and released his first album since the 60's, entitled "Two Hands". The release was a masterpiece and he has continued performing and creating music ever since.

Breakthrough Works

Leon Fleisher has been responsible for not only giving the world a bevvy of fantastic music, but he has also performed some works in a way that is beyond breathtaking. From a young age Leon was practicing and honing his skills as a pianist, which definitely came in handy as he took to the stage and gave interpretations of works from some of the most famous and legendary artists in the history of music such as Beethoven and Brahms. These interpretations are some of the works that he is most well known and respected for, with some of the work being Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25, as well as Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody On A Theme of Paganini", Franck's "Symphonic Variations", and more.

Leon Fleisher Trivia

When it comes to an artist like Leon Fleisher, it should be no surprise that he has won a fair share of awards and accolades for his years of service to the world of music and the fans who love it. In 1994 Leon won the award for Instrumentalist of the Year from Musical American, but that's not all. He has also been awarded Honorary Doctorates from the Cleveland Institute of Music, The Boston Conservatory, and Townson State University. The list of honors and awards goes on and on, but the most recent addition to all these is that recently in 2012 he was asked to play at the Supreme Court of the United States by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one more honor in a long line of many.
