Leon Russell Background

Leon Russell was born Claude Russell Bridges in Lawton, Oklahoma. By the time he was 14, he was already performing at nightclubs throughout Oklahoma, showcasing his incredible musical talent for anybody who would listen. As a part of a band called The Starlighters, Leon Russell helped create an entirely unique and fantastic musical style called the Tulsa Sound. Thanks to his original take on music, Russell started to gain attention in the musical world, and he decided to move to Los Angeles to work as a session musician. Russell's musical talent knows no bounds, as he can play the piano, the organ, the guitar, the bass, and even the mandolin, and his broad set of musical skills made him a highly desirable session musician. He started playing with artists like Ray Charles, Elton John, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Frank Sinatra, the Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and many other major artists in music. The reason that Leon Russell was constantly surrounded by phenomenal musicians was because he was also a phenomenal musician, and he can still put on a knockout show for his excited audiences.

Whether Russell was working with the biggest names in the music biz or was working on his own solo projects, his fans could always count on him to crank out incredible music. His loose, exaggerated Southern drawl was so distinct that it has influenced other artists for decades, such as the Pixies' lead singer Black Francis. There's no doubt that Leon Russell has been one of the biggest forces in the music scene, and even though a great deal of his work was behind the scenes, he has still left an unforgettable legacy in music.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame couldn't gloss over Russell, however, and in 2011 Russell was inducted into this prestigious hall of fame, something that every rock musician dreams of. There are few artists around that have had as much success and influence in music as Leon Russell, which is why you should definitely take advantage of this opportunity to see him perform live while you can!
