Les Miserables is one of the
most famous plays to ever hit Broadway. Since debuting there in the '80s, it's been revived on stages all across the world,
and now it's coming to Grand Rapids. Watch the epic drama unfold as Jean Valjean, a French peasant who was imprisoned for
stealing food to feed his family, escapes and is pursued by the dogged policeman, Jalvert.
Les Miserables
has a reputation that precedes it. This play is based on a classic tome by Victor Hugo, who penned the sprawling drama in
the 1860s. In it, he deals with many of the major issues of the day, including the political upheaval in France and the shifting
paradigms that arose in the wake of the Enlightenment. Though its themes are profound, the musical is known for its catchy
songs, like "I Dreamed a Dream."
Les Miz, as its known to theater fans, is a favorite. At its center are two major characters: the noble Jean Valjean, who
is always pursuing freedom, and Jalvert, who is always pursuing Valjean. The cat and mouse game they play ratchets up the
tension while the audience loses themselves in the play's soaring songs.
