About Lila Downs
Hailing from Oaxaca Mexico,
Lila was born to parents Anita Sanchez and Allen Downs. Her mother was a musical performer while her father was an arts academic
from Minnesota. With an already established family pedigree, Lila would begin singing and performing before the age of ten.
Lila would be immersed in the rich cultural environment of central Mexico, being able to fuse the disparate elements of modern
Mexican music, the wave of Western music that poured over Mexico during the era, and the extensive reservoir of traditional
and indigenous music of Mexico's past.
In her formative teen years Lila would spend time living in Southern California,
where she would study English and learn more about the other side of her heritage. These years of her life would be considerably
important for her, as she was able to better understand and appreciate her Native American roots and the complexity of her
Like many young artists, Lila would bounce between different life experiences that would eventually
inform and shape her music and songwriting in the future. She would spend some time traveling across North America as a 'deadhead',
the name given to the die-hard fans of the legendary rock band The Grateful Dead. She would move back to Mexico for a time
before heading in her father's footsteps to the Northern US, attending university for a brief time in New York before heading
back to Mexico again. She would go back to being a performing artist, working both in Mexico as well as in the United States.
would constantly strive to bring her native musical influences to new audiences, taking her musical ensemble titled La Trova
Serrana all across the United States. She would become a regular in California and Oaxaca. During this time she also developed
a close friendship with musician Paul Cohen, who served as a mentor and friend during her early performing years. It wasn't
until 1994 that Lila would begin recording, and her works would span a diverse mixture of genres including Mexican traditional
and jazz. Since then, Lila's work would take her all over the world and over a dozen albums later, she's the foremost Mexican
American performing artist in the industry.
Lila started her recording career under unassuming
circumstances, recording and releasing her debut album Ofrenda independently. The album would be the cornerstone of her future
musical endeavors and be a pell mell of traditional music, Spanish music, and native Oaxacan influences. While Ofrenda would
not be a commercial success, it charted the course of Lila's future works for decades to come.
1999 would be Lila's
advent upon the world stage with her hit record La Sandunga, her first recorded under a major record label. The album expanded
upon her earlier works of fusing traditional and modern sounds, and would feature the hit singles "La Sandunga" and "Border".
follow up Tree of Life would lead her on a worldwide tour, with her musical sound continuing to develop in its own unique
way. Tree of Life would be critical and commercial success, and a testament to Lila's growing longevity in the industry. Lila's
musical chops would continue to grow as she released hit album after hit album over the next decade and into today, where
her signature sound and traditional influences make her one of the most unique recording artists of her generation.
Lila has been profoundly affected by the plight of migrants, particularly those traveling from Latin America
and Mexico into the US. Her life experiences have made her a strong advocate for humane immigration policies.
tried her hand at acting, having taken small roles in multiple films. Most of her film choices are culture pieces significant
to her Mexican heritage.
