About Lila Downs
Hailing from Oaxaca, Mexico, Lila Downs would be born to Anita Sanchez and Allen Downs. Her
mother was a musical performer, and her father was an arts academic from Minnesota. With a family history of musicality, Downs
would begin singing and performing before she reached the age of ten. Downs would be steeped in the rich culture of central
Mexico which incorporates elements of modern Mexican music, Western influences, and the extensive repertoire of indigenous
and traditional music that is part of Mexico's culture and history.
In her formative teen years, Downs would spend some
time living in Southern California, where she would study English and learn more about her American heritage. These years
of her life would prove immensely formative, helping her to better understand and appreciate her Native American roots and
the complexity of her multi-ethnic identity.
Like many artists, Downs would draw on the variety of her life experiences
to inform and shape her music and the future of her songwriting career. She should spend some time traveling across North
America as a "deadhead" - the name given to the die-hard fans of the legendary rock band The Grateful Dead. She would move
back to Mexico for a time before following in her father's footsteps to the Northern United States, attending university for
a brief time in New York before once again returning to Mexico. She would again take up performing arts, working in both the
United States as well as Mexico.
Downs would constantly strive to bring her Mexican musical sensibilities to new audiences,
taking her ensemble La Trova Serrana all over the United States. She would become a regular performer in both California and
Oaxaca. During this time, she also developed a close friendship with musician Paul Cohen, who served as a friend and mentor
during her early performing years. It wasn't until 1994 that Downs would begin recording, and her works would span a diverse
mixture of genres including jazz and Mexican traditional music. Since then, Downs' work would take her all over the world.
No less than twelve albums into her career, Downs is the foremost Mexican-American performing artist in the industry.
Downs would start her recording career under unassuming circumstances, recording and releasing
her debut album Ofrenda independently. The album, a pell mell combination of traditional, Spanish, and native Oaxacan influences,
would be the cornerstone of her future musical endeavors. While Ofredna would not be a commercial success, it would chart
the course of Downs' future work for decades to come.
1999 would mark the advent of Downs' appearance on the world stage
with her hit record La Sandunga, her first album to be recorded under a major record label. The album expanded upon her earlier
works that fused traditional and modern sounds, and would feature the hit singles "Border" and "La Sandunga."
album, Tree of Life, would lead her on a worldwide tour, with her musical sound continuing to develop in its own unique way.
Tree of Life would be a critical and commercial success, and a testament to Downs' longevity in the industry. Downs' musical
chops would continue to improve as she released hit album after hit album over the next decade and into today, where her signature
sound and traditional influences make her one of the most unique recording artists of her generation.
has been profoundly affected by the plight of migrants, particularly those traveling from Latin America and Mexico into the
United States. Her life experiences have made her a strong advocate for humane immigration policies.
Downs has tried
her hand at acting, having taken small roles in multiple films. Most of her film choices are culture pieces significant to
her Mexican heritage.
