In the late 1990s, vocalist Sarah McLachlan was tiring of the lack of recognition of female artists of her era that were making large contributions tot he music scene. Instead of fighting the system, McLachlan decided to create Lilith Fair to give such artists a proper venue to perform. The first incarnation of the tour ran from 1997-1999, performing more than 100 different shows.
Lilith Fair disappeared for a while in the 2000s, but the blowout music fest is back now and more powerful than ever.
