Lincoln Theatre DC Trivia

If you studied up on American history in school, you might know that the 1960s were full of turmoil across the nation, and Washington D.C. was no exception. Race riots in 1968 closed the Lincoln Theatre temporarily, and the theater wasn't rebuilt until the mid-1990s. The Lincoln Theatre has historic roots in its D.C. neighborhood, and Washington's Black Broadway has thrived thanks to this gem of a venue. The theater thrived from the '20s to the '50s as a mostly black music hangout, although desegregation worked to its dismay in the '50s, as other venues began opening their doors to African Americans and taking away the Lincoln's business. Regardless, the Lincoln Theatre is today running full force, and it has even made it onto the list of U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Lincoln Theatre has tons of history in the nation's capital, and its continuance to thrive speaks volumes for its impact on the Washington D.C. arts and entertainment scene.

Lincoln Theatre DC Background

The Lincoln Theatre first opened to the public in 1922, originally hosting silent films and vaudeville. The venue opened as a place for the black community to take in theatrical entertainment, and all kinds of big-name performers lit up the spotlight at the venue through the 1950s, including renowned artists like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Lionel Hampton. The theater began declining in the 1950s when desegregation made it possible for African Americans to catch performances at other area venues, and eventually in the 1960s the theater fell into disrepair, with the 1968 race riots in D.C. serving as the last straw before the venue closed. With restoration in the 1990s, however, the Lincoln Theatre finally re-opened in 1994, and the 1,200 seat venue has been an area favorite ever since then. Jazz music is still the cream of the crop at the Lincoln Theatre, with the venue bringing renowned artists like Quincy Jones, Chuck Brown and Wynton Marsalis to its stage in recent years for big shows. The Duke Ellington Jazz Festival has also been a big draw for the Lincoln Theatre since the mid-2000s.
