Following financial struggles, the relatively Latin outfit Los Amigos Invisibles moved to the Big Apple to pursue a wider fan base and an American debut. The result was 1998's The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera, which started a revolution of sound that continues into the most recent decade, as the band continues to craft their funk and disco with a modern twist.
Los Amigos Invisibles was founded in the early 1990s in Caracas, Venezuela. Quickly earmarked as Venezuela's exclusive dance band, Los Amigos Invisibles began a quest to persuade the owners of forgotten discotheques that salsa and merengue are not the only elements of dance. It wasn't long before the Los Amigos Invisibles put a new face on the club scene of Caracas. They released their debut album, A Typical and Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band, which was well received in their native land, enabling them to sell out clubs quickly around Caracas. In 1996, David Byrne's Luaka Boprecord label inked a deal with the group after discovering a CD they had showcased in a Big Apple record store. Shortly after, The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera became a pet project. This sophomore record was released in 1998 and received acclaim from press and musicians. Their next album, A Venezuelan Journey Into Space, garnered a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Latin Alternative Album and a Latin Grammy for Best Rock Album. They continued to churn out more albums that cultivated more loyal fans with every release!
Commercial of 2009 earned Los Amigos Invisibles some serious commercial fame, as the set found itself in the Top 20 Latin Pop Albums on the Billboard charts as the group's first album to see such a high spot.
