The franchise started in 1946 as the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League before relocating to Minneapolis and taking the Lakers name from Minnesota's "Land of 10,000 Lakes." Led by George Mikan, the Minneapolis Lakers won the 1948 NBL title and the 1949 BAA championship, then captured four of the next five NBA crowns after the leagues merged. Jerry Buss bought the team in 1979 and built the fast-breaking "Showtime" era around Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, with Pat Riley on the bench and James Worthy added in 1982. That group won five championships in nine years, including Finals wins over Boston in 1985 and 1987. The Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal pairing with coach Phil Jackson produced a second three-peat from 2000 through 2002, and Bryant later teamed with Pau Gasol for titles in 2009 and 2010. LeBron James arrived in 2018 and, alongside Anthony Davis, helped the Lakers win their 17th NBA championship in 2020. In February 2025, the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic in a trade that reshaped the roster.
