Throughout his childhood, Lou Reed had a tremendous appetite for rock and roll - not an uncommon dream perhaps, but Reed
was different. By his teenage years, he had learned to play guitar, had made his first record, had isolated himself from his
parents and had already experienced electro-shock therapy. During these formative years, Reed's parents persisted in encouraging
Reed to take typing lessons so that he would develop a marketable skill, but that didn't seem to rid him of his rock and roll
aspirations. As much as he could, Reed tried to live a "normal" life. He attended Syracuse University in New York and even
joined the R.O.T.C. He took a position as a staff songwriter with Pickwick Records and tried to write Top 10 hits. But he
never seemed to quite fit the role. So in 1965, he and John Cale, another staff writer, founded a band called the Warlocks.
They changed names numerous times until finally settling on The Velvet Underground, a name adopted from a pornographic novel.
For awhile, The Velvet Underground was the house band at Cafe Bizarre in Greenwich Village. But they were canned after
playing Black Angel's Death Song after being instructed not to play it. On the night of their discharge, they garnered a new
fan - renowned artist, Andy Warhol. And suddenly another door opened to a whole new adventure. Warhol thought Velvet Underground
would work well in a multimedia show, The Exploding Plastic Inevitable. And before they knew it, they embarked on a U.S.
and Canadian tour to mixed reviews. Reed's songs hardly fell into the "Summer of Love" theme that was sweeping the country
at the time. The Velvet Underground generated four albums in four years before Reed's departure in 1970. The group was for
the most part completely ignored by the music consumer and critics. But still, the band's undeniable inspiration on later
artists was not so easy to ignore! Today, Reed has continued rocking the music scene even after the departure of the Velvet
Underground, and he attracts all kinds of fans to his live shows.
