Mac DeMarco Background

Mac DeMarco hails from British Columbia, Canada. During high school, he gigged with multiple bands, including The Sound of Love, The Meat Cleavers and Outdoor Miners. Upon graduating from high school in 2008, DeMarco picked up and relocated to Vancouver to focus on his musical passions.

In 2009, DeMarco issued a self-produced album, Heat Wave. He coined himself, "Makeout Videotape." During this time, he worked on what was considered to be "psychedelic" video projects. He collaborated with Jen Clement and Alex Calder and inked a deal with Unfamiliar Records. He also toured with a Vancouver-based band dubbed the Japandroids.

DeMarco relocated to Montreal in 2011 and started cutting material as a solo artist. At the dawn of 2012, his Rock and Roll Nightclub EP arrived. The EP includes skits and slowed-down vocals, which mesmerized his new label, Captured Tracks, enough that they came to the mutual conclusion that a full-length album should be released.

The album, 2, was the result. It was not only well-received by critics but also garnered him a "Best New Music" designation from Pitchfork Media. His tune "Moving Like Mike" was licensed by Target, the U.S. retail chain, for a TV ad.

In January 2014, DeMarco revealed that he would be releasing a new album. The album, Salad Days, dropped on April 1, 2014. This album also took home the "Best New Music" designation from Pitchfork Media. Additionally, Salad Days earned its status as a shortlisted nominee for the Polaris Music Prize of 2014.

Currently, DeMarco is touring and recording with the artist Tyler, The Creator. Together, they are delivering tracks that are unveiled in a subscription series known as, The Wonderful World of Mac DeMarco 7" Club Vol. 1. Every six to eight weeks, subscribers get two 7" records featuring a plethora of recordings by DeMarco.

Mac DeMarco Trivia

In 2011, DeMarco failed to find work as a musician. He then participated in medical experiments for cash as well as working on a road paving crew.

Mac DeMarco Concert Experience

Broadening your horizons to include music outside of your comfort zone is a euphoric feeling that can only be trumped by the hunt to find new music that you may have never imagined enjoying before. Mac DeMarco will surely provide a unique live experience that you will not forget!

DeMarco's live shows have been previously described as "raunchfests," as DeMarco engages the audience with off-color jokes. Sometimes his shows involve nudity and lewd acts. When asked why he illuminates this behavior onstage, even though it doesn't necessarily relate to his music, he said, "If we're getting all loose and goofy, the crowd usually lightens up and starts having a funkier time."

DeMarco's style has been described as "off-kilter pop." His guitar-based compositions have also been deemed glam-inspired. DeMarco himself has labeled his style as "jizz jazz." Shuggie Otis, Jonathan Richman and Steely Dan have all been credited as being DeMarco's favorite artists. During his shows, he uses a guitar he purchased for 30 Canadian dollars when he was just 16 years old. He also uses effects pedals that he said he honestly believes "no serious musician would ever use."

Judging by concert reviews, DeMarco sure puts on quite an interesting act! But, why not spice up your life by going to one of his shows? It's easy to sit at home and listen to music on your computer or radio, but if DeMarco delivers a show the way critics say, it is definitely worthwhile to check out!
