About Machine Gun Kelly
Richard Colson Baker hails from Houston, Texas, where he would spend most of his early
years traveling around the United States and the globe as his parents cycled through various missionary posts around the world,
including Chicago, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Germany, and Egypt. Constantly moving around and being exposed to multiple cultures
and languages, Baker looked to music for companionship during his formative years, and developed an unbeatable mastery over
language, utilizing English as strong an instrument as a guitar or drum set.
Still a teenager, Baker was living in New
York City when he made an appearance at Harlem's legendary Apollo Theater, winning consecutive nights of a rap competition
and becoming the first caucasian rapper to ever pull a victory from the theater. Picking up momentum, Baker soon picked up
the moniker of Machine Gun Kelly and would make appearance on MTV, soon being featured on major independent record label Block
Starz Music. By 2010 his career was heating up, with his tracks gaining major airplay across the national airwaves along with
his track "Cleveland" becoming the anthem for NBA team the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Machine Gun Kelly came closer to becoming
a household with each new project, as he collaborated with notables across the entertainment industry such as Juicy J, Sean
Combs, Waka Flocka Flame, Lex luger, and Jackass star Steve-O. His ever growing media presence got him a record deal with
Interscope/Bad Boy Records, where his releases would blow up music charts across the spectrum. His work would be featured
on a variety of mediums, including on World Wrestling Entertainment, MTV, and XXL Magazine. With all eyes on this up and coming
freshmen rapper, Machine Gun Kelly's momentum is unstoppable as he continues to transform the rap scene with each new release.
Machine Gun Kelly's first major label release would come in the form of the 2012 EP Half Naked
& Almost Famous. Though just five tracks long, the EP would spawn some of his earliest mainstream hits, including lead
off single "Wild Boy" which climbed to the #10 position on Billboard's heatseekers chart. On its own, the release would hit
light up charts across the board, hitting #46, #10, and #9 on the Billboard 200, US R&B, and US Rap charts, respectively.
debut full length Lace Up would come just months after his EP release, coming in at the #2 position on the US R&B and
US Rap charts as well as a #4 showing on the Billboard 200. The album fell under the production of some of hip hop's greatest
artists, including Sean Diddy Combs and Harve Pierre, and spawned three mega hit singles, including "Invincible" and crowd
anthem "Hold On (Shut Up)". One of the most noteworthy freshmen releases of the last decade, the album gained widespread critical
acclaim with a four star rating from media critic Allmusic.
With wicked control and flow when it
comes to the English language, it may come as a surprise that it wasn't Baker's first language. Due to his spending so much
time abroad, the Baker first began using Arabic before speaking English.
