Manchester City FC History

The history of Manchester City FC dates back to 1880 when the club was known as St. Mark's (West Gorton). In 1887 the name was changed to Ardwick Association Football Club before becoming Manchester City in 1894. Also referred to as the Citizens, the Sky Blues, and City, Manchester City are the reigning Premier League champions and will look to continue their run of success which had previously peaked after winning the league title during the 2011-2012 season. Manager Manuel Pellegrini has proven that he knows how to make all of the right adjustments and with talented players like Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure the Sky Blues are destined to be a major factor in Premier League play for years to come. The team won their first FA Cup title in 1904 and had a string of success early on but also had its fair share of struggles i the latter part of the 20th Century. By the 2000s the team was in financial trouble until 2008 when it was bought by the Abu Dhabi United Group and began to acquire high profile players. This ushered in a new era of success as City went on to become one of the top squads in the EPL, winning the league in 2012 and 2014.

Manchester City FC Barclays Premier League

The Premier League is the top professional soccer league in England and is made up of 20 teams. The league operates on a promotion and relegation system meaning that the bottom teams are dropped down to a lower division while the top teams of that division are promoted the following season to compete in the Premier League. Outside of England the league is often referred to as the English Premier League, or the EPL, and is the most popular and widely watched professional soccer league in the world. For much of the 2000s the EPL was dominated by Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal, who were known as the Big Four. However in recent years Tottenham and Manchester City have broken through to earn a spot among the league's elite. Manchester City are currently the EPL's defending champions and also won the league title in the 2011-2012 season, becoming the first team outside of the Big Four to do so.

In 2003 Manchester City retired the number 23 of Marc-Vivien Foe, a former player who had been on loan to the Citizens when he died on the pitch while playing for Cameroon during the 2003 Confederations Cup.
