About Mannheim Steamroller
Musical genius and holiday expert
Chip Davis would be the sire of the Mannheim Steamroller project. Louis F. "Chip" Davis, Jr. would begin his life in Ohio
and spend his childhood in this heartland of America. Deeply interested in music from a young age, Chip would have learned
the piano and would start writing his own songs before he was ten years old. He would dedicate his formative years to the
understanding and creation of music, and would attend the well-respected School of Music at the University of Michigan.
musical career had humble beginnings – he would start out writing jingles for a small business in Nebraska. Never daunted
by ignominious circumstance, Chip would eventually write a small canon of jingles that launched him to fame in the jingle
industry. He would find an excellent partner and collaborator by the name of William Fries, and together they formed a musical
outfit the likes of which had never been seen in the industry. They would produce an amazing five albums which eventually
earned Chip a well-deserved SESAC music award for song writing.
Hardly content to rest on his laurels, Chip decided
to take his career into his own hands. He would found Mannheim Steamroller with the aim of revolutionizing Christmas music
as it was known. Any new venture is difficult at the start, and Chip was unable to score a deal with a major label. Undeterred,
he would found his own American Gramaphone label in 1974. American Gramaphone has since become a well-respected record label
and successful business venture that carries Mannheim Steamroller's extensive discography among other musical projects.
year after the founding American Gramaphone, Mannheim Steamroller would release their debut album that redefined the genre
of Christmas and holiday music. Mannheim Steamroller would successfully bring together the sounds of rock, jazz, and baroque
music into their unique compositions that retained the classic comfort of holiday and Christmas music as well as adjusting
them for a truly modern sound with widespread contemporary appeal. Chip has many other music projects which include recording
music for PBS's Saving the Wildlife and collaborating with renowned musician Mason Williams.
Steamroller's debut, entitled Fresh Aire and released in 1975, would be a runaway breakout hit. It paved the way for Mannheim
Steamroller's follow up album, elegantly titled Fresh Aire II. With every full length album chronologically denoted with Roman
numerals, Chip would finally settle on Fresh Aire VIII as the grand finale of Mannheim's original series in 2000.
Steamroller would also release other complementary albums, such as the Fresh Aire Interludes, a piano-based album that would
compile Chip's diverse collection of previous works and arrangements. Other highly collectible Mannheim Steamroller releases
include Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Live, Christmas Extraordinaire, Christmas Celebration, and Christmas Song. This rich
collection of Christmas music, in addition to the Fresh Aire series, would place Mannheim Steamroller as one of the most well-known
and influential Christmas music artists around the world.
Chip Davis would take a brief break from
his beloved Mannheim Steamroller in 2008 because of a surgery that rendered him unable to perform. Chip knew that Mannheim
Steamroller was a core part of his fans' Christmas experience, and with the knowledge that it was an issue bigger than himself,
he would hire musicians to take his place and even divided the band for the season so that Mannheim Steamroller could simultaneously
perform for the east and west coasts.
