Mariah Carey Background

Mariah Carey was born and raised in Huntington, Long Island, New York. The daughter of an opera singer/voice coach and an aeronautical engineer, Carey revealedher musical gifts early on. At the tender age of two, she was able to mimic her mother's operatic singing style. Carey began vocal lessons two years later. Following high school graduation, Carey relocated to Manhattan. To make ends meet, she was employed as a coat check girl and waitress. She also took up cosmetology while vigorously following her dreams of a music career at night. Fate dealt Carey a good hand when she and pal Brenda K. Starr, singer, attended a CBS Records party. On the urging of Starr, Carey took along one of her demos. She hoped to target Jerry Greenberg of Columbia as her captive audience but the president of Columbia Records, Tommy Mottola, seized the demo before it could get to Greenberg. Mottola took a listen on his commute home and inked a deal with Carey instantly. She debuted under her new label with her eponymous album in 1990.The fruits of her labor included four No. 1 tracks: "I Don't Wanna Cry," "Vision of Love," "Some Day" and "Love Takes Time." In 1992 her sophomore album, Emotions, dropped, featuring "Make it Happen" and "Can't Let Go." Additionally,Carey claimed another No. 1 single with the title track. In the spring of 1992, MTV's Unplugged featured Carey. The performance precipitated an opportunity for a home video and album. The albumyielded another No. 1 track with "I'll Be There." In 1993, Carey released Music Box, featuring No. 1 hits "Hero" and "Dreamlover." A year later, Carey came out with a holiday album, Merry Christmas, which mixed the classics with the contemporary. The year 1995 brought her album, Daydream. Boyz II Men and Wu-Tang Clan lent their talents to the effort as well. Butterfly hatched in 1997. The album featured nearly a dozen songs penned by Carey. But Carey's success caught up to her. On the precipice of the release of Glitter, her cinematic debut, the wheels fell off. In the summer of 2001 Carey was said to have gone through a "physical and emotional collapse." She was hospitalized and went home after two weeks. By the close of 2002, Carey was back and better than ever and released Charmbracelet. Carey continued to release several albums throughout the 2000s. More recently, Carey served as a judge for American Idol during season 12. Her latest release is I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse, which dropped in 2014.
