Martin Garrix, born Martijn Gerard Garritsen on 14 May 1996 in Amstelveen, Netherlands, is a Dutch DJ and record producer whose rise ranks among the fastest in electronic music. He picked up guitar at age eight, and after watching Tiësto perform at the 2004 Athens Olympics opening ceremony, he downloaded the production software FL Studio and started building tracks of his own. He sharpened those skills at the Herman Brood Academy in Utrecht, graduating in 2013, the same year his breakthrough arrived.
That breakthrough was "Animals," the June 2013 big room anthem that became a hit in several European countries and made him the youngest artist ever to reach number one on Beatport. The milestones stacked up quickly from there: in 2014 he headlined the first edition of Ultra South Africa, his first major festival, became the youngest DJ to headline Ultra Music Festival in Miami at 17, and released his debut EP, Gold Skies, in July. Rather than staying in the big room lane that broke him, he spent the following years widening his sound into progressive house, deep house, and future bass, collaborating with Usher, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha, Troye Sivan, Khalid, and David Guetta along the way.
Garrix has since headlined stages most DJs never reach, from Tomorrowland Festival, Coachella Music Festival, Creamfields Festival, and Electric Daisy Carnival to the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. He launched his own label, Stmpd Rcrds, in 2016, signed a worldwide deal with Sony Music, released his debut album, Sentio, in April 2022, and held summer residencies at Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza along with club residencies in Las Vegas. He also performs as half of AREA21, his duo with Maejor. He has collected five DJ Mag Top 100 DJs titles across his career, and Martin Garrix tickets tend to be in high demand whenever festival headline slots or residency nights are announced.
