Though they formed in 1999, this alternative metal band burst on to the scene with 2004’s ridiculously awesome concept album Leviathan, based on Herman Melville’s classic work of literature, Moby Dick. Bringing an epic scope to their brand of thrashing metal, this is a band you definitely want to catch live!

Mastodon formed in 1999 and issued their debut, Remission, in 2002. Within the realm of metal, they were considered a hot act to watch. But when 2004’s Leviathan came out, the band was put on the map, increasing their reach outside of the traditional metal fanbase and beginning to find a following among indie rock listeners as well.

Mastodon has continued to earn accolades with each new release. 2006’s Blood Mountain earned the group a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance, and 2009’s Crack the Skye amazed critics with a mind-warping concept album about a boy traveling through a wormhole to meet Rasputin.
