Mastodon formed in 1999 and issued their debut, Remission, in 2002. Within the realm of metal, they were considered a hot act to watch. But when 2004’s Leviathan came out, the band was put on the map, increasing their reach outside of the traditional metal fanbase and beginning to find a following among indie rock listeners as well.
