About the Band

Mayday formed in 1997 when some new blood was infused into former Taiwanese pop group So Band which had been together for two years. All of the members of the group attended The Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University and the group stayed together after graduation even though they all went to different universities. In 1998 they signed with Rock Records and released their first single, Racing Car, as well as contributed to the compilation, Taiwan Independent Compilation Album. The band continued to record and tour but unfortunately right as the group appeared to be reaching the height of their popularity one of the band members, Masa, received a military call up. The group had just released their third album to their strongest sales yet and were forced to do a farewell tour from August through September 2001. Fortunately, when Masa was done with his service, the band got back together in 2003 and have been recording and touring together ever since. The band has released seven studio albums: Mayday's First Album; Viva Love; People Life, Ocean Wild; Time Machine; All God's Children Can Dance / Falling Angels with a Flying Soul; Born to Love; and Poetry of the Day After.

Breakthrough

Mayday experienced success from their debut album, Mayday's First Album, but it was their second album, Viva Love, that really took off. The album was released in 200 and went on to sell more than 350,000 copies. The success of Viva Love led to the band winning the Golden Melody Award for Best Band. Additionally they went on to sell the most concert tickets in Taiwan in 2000. The following year the band worked on a motion picture soundtrack and released their third album, People Life, Ocean Wild, which sold 35,000 copies in its first month. The band had clearly made its mark and despite taking two years off while one of the members was in the military, fans remained loyal and were more than happy to go out and support Mayday when they got back together.

The Experience

You have been waiting for months for this night to come and finally as the lights lower you begin to see Ashin, Masa, Monster, Stone, and GuanYou/Ming making their way out onto the stage. The crowd erupts in applause as the group picks up their instruments and approach the mic. A hush falls over the crowd as Mayday thank them and launches into a fan favorite from an album like Mayday's First Album, Viva Love, People Life, Ocean Wild, Time Machine, All God's Children Can Dance / Falling Angels with a Flying Soul, Born to Love, or Poetry of the Day After. The crowd once again erupts and sings and dances along to hits throughout the night. After making music together for well over a decade, the duo have developed chemistry both in the studio and on the stage that is undeniable and makes their live show a spectacle to behold. The high energy output from the band translates perfectly to the crowd and you spend the entire night dancing and singing along.

Mayday Trivia

The group first got together as a duo, SO Band, but decided to change their name when they added more members. They needed a new name when signing up for the Formoz Festival and chose Mayday and the name stuck.
