Dover International Speedway History
Melvin Joseph of Melvin L. Joseph Construction Company,
Inc. built the track in 1969 with an asphalt surface, and on July 6, 1969, Dover International Speedway saw its inaugural
race - the Mason-Dixon 300 with Richard Petty winning that historic event. The asphalt surface was replaced in 1995 with concrete,
becoming only the second NASCAR racing venue to be surfaced in concrete. Through the years the speedway has had its renovations,
from expanding seating for its fans to committing to a multi-year improvement project coined "The Monster Makeover." The speedway
started this project in 2006, and one of the first improvement projects was the addition of a new 12-suite sky box and a new
2,100 square feet addition to the media center in the infield. Dover International Speedway expanded its bus parking, paved
more handicapped parking areas, widened its walkways behind three of its grandstands, as well as improved the sound systems.
In 2008, more improvements and additions were added; an emergency service building was built as well as a new Victory Plaza,
which serves as the home to the new Monster Monument - a 46-foot-tall fiberglass structure. One year later, the speedway replaced
the front stretch pit wall to install a longer safer barrier to contribute to a wider and safer pit road.
Speedway is also celebrated for the Monster Bridge. It was completed in 2004 and is a sight to behold! It's a glass-enclosed
structure that has only 56 seats over the third turn! Unfortunately, tickets for the Monster Bridge are not for sale. To be
fair to everyone and to avoid a bidding war, Dover International Speedway is working with their sponsors and partners to use
seats in the Monster Bridge as prizes for contests and promotions.
