About Meat Puppets
Meat Puppets formed initially as the project of brother musicians
extraordinaire Cris and Curt Kirkwood. The duo teamed up with longtime friend and jam partner Derrick Bostrom, a talented
drummer who had collaborated with bassist Cris Kirkwood multiple times in the past. The three would practice together, going
through name and sound changes until settling on the moniker Meat Puppets in 1980. The group came from punk rock roots, influenced
heavily by the transatlantic punk movement that dominated the late 70s, and soon joined onto punk pioneer label SST Records.
By 1982 the band released their debut album and age of the Meat Puppets officially dawned on the North American music scene.
band began to mature out of their raw punk sounds, adding more depth to their songwriting range and venturing into other genres,
including acid rock and country sounds. By the mid 80s the band was officially an alternative rock band, redefining rock music
alongside some of the biggest names of the 80s including the Gun Club and the Violent Femmes.
The band formed a prolific
work ethic, in a constant state of songwriting, recording, touring, or all of the above as they built up one of the most loyal
fan bases the music industry has ever seen. Their sound continued to mature, and by the early 90s the band had gained widespread
success with performances on MTV Unplugged alongside 90s grunge idols Nirvana. The band soon was touring alongside the biggest
names in rock, including opening for rock legends Stone Temple Pilots.
Amidst personal problems and band wide disputes,
2002 would be a tough year for the Meat Puppets as Curt Kirkwood's departure to play with bands Eyes Adrift and Volcano lead
to the band's breakup. Cris would face a prison sentence for assault, and the future of the Meat Puppets was bleak at best.
2006 would bring a Meat Puppets reunion under the Kirkwood brothers, sans drummer Derrick Bostrom, which would tour extensively
and bring about the first new Meat Puppets material in years. Today, the band is still going strong, releasing a steady stream
of albums while constantly hitting the tour circuit with their current lineup featuring Curt Kirkwood, Cris Kirkwood, and
Shandon Sahm on drums.
The definitive Meat Puppets album would drop in 1994, with the legendary
alt rock album Too High to Die. The band would receive a gold record, making it the band's most commercially successful album
to date, and spawned a slew of singles that would dominate airwaves and become instant Meat Puppet crowd favorites. The album
received glowing reviews from Allmusic and Rolling Stone, and lit up the charts hitting the #1 position on US Heat. THe album
would be carried by five separate hit singles, including the #2 charting "Backwater", #28 charting "We Don't Exist", "Meat
Puppets Promo", and "Roof with a Hole".
The band's earlier album Huevos was recorded almost entirely
out of raw first takes, and featured little production. The band would bounce back and forth between highly polished albums
featuring their maturing sound and raw frenetic releases that underlined their punk roots.
