Melissa Ferrick grew up with music in her heart and an instrument in her hand. She even accompanied her band manager father when he attended concerts at various clubs in Boston's North Shore. She took music lessons as a child, including the classic violin. During elementary and junior high school Ferrick learned how to play the trumpet and the bass and during her years at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music she taught herself how to play the acoustic guitar. She left school with a desire to make it as a solo artist. The aspiring singer started performing in clubs and coffeehouses in the East Village of New York City and got her big break when she replaced the opening act for the singer Morrissey on tour. This led to her signing a recording contract with Atlantic Records and the release of her first album, Massive Blur in 1993. Since then, the artist has enjoyed much success, finding her way through life's many obstacles.
