Memorial Gym History

First opened in the early 1950s, Memorial Gym has become nothing short of an iconic part of the local sports scene around the Nashville, Tennessee area, mostly thanks to the Commodores of Vanderbilt University. Memorial Gym has been the backdrop for some huge games over the years, for both men's and women's basketball, and there is always hope of a very bright future thanks to the steady stream of hoops talent that comes to town.

Expanded three times in the 60s and fully renovated in 2002, Memorial Gym is the perfect example of both the old and the new, giving it a rich background that is sure to have you on your feet in no time as the Commodores hit the court looking to light up the scoreboard and put on a show. Once you're there in the stands, you'll understand loud and clear why so many people love turning up to Memorial Gym to see all of the action up close and personal.

Memorial Gym Events Hosted

One look at the schedule of the Memorial Gym and you'll see plenty of amazing matchups and events that you know you'll want to be a part of, as this is a venue that is always in the middle of one amazing matchup or show after another. With more than 14,000 for the biggest events of the year, this is one of those slamming venues that is always the perfect place to be if you're looking for a top-tier sporting event that is sure to be the talk of the town leading up to the opening tip.

It's never easy in the SEC, the conference often cited as the very best in all of college sports, but the Commodores tend to have some amazing playmakers whenever they hit the court. To come out to a top-tier SEC matchup is to see some of the very best players in the country, giving you an experience that you'll be talking about long after it's all over.

Nashville, Tennessee

If you don't know anything about Nashville, Tennessee, it's probably time to change that by actually just going and seeing it all for yourself. This is a city that has more character than just about any city in the world, as it's famous for its world-classic musical scene that has been the home for some of the greatest musicians in history. These days, the enthusiasm of the good ole days has carried into the new, where you can find an unbelievable mix of melodies and genres that still makes it a haven for the top talents to hone their craft.

Ever since Robert Altman brought it altogether with his groundbreaking film Nashville, the secret has pretty much been out about what amazing thrills this city has to offer, as you simply won't find another place like it no matter how much you love to travel. Once you've been there, you'll be looking to go back much sooner than later – particularly if you make it out to Memorial Gym on the Vanderbilt campus.

Memorial Gym Seating Layout

Whether you're on the right, left or somewhere in the center, you're bound to get a great show. No, we're not talking about governmental impasses and political theater; we're talking about the elegant seating arrangement of Memorial Gym. There isn't a bad seat in the house, which is something that you really won't understand until you actually make it out to see it for yourself. Once you're there watching one of your favorite musicians, the last thing you'll be thinking about is your seat, however, as you'll be jumping out of it all too often from one ballad to the next as a great musician brings the house down.

Memorial Gym Trivia

Do you know that the Memorial Gym has been the backdrop for the SEC men's basketball championship two times? Yup, the top teams in the SEC came together both in 1984 and in 1991, delivering some big-time memories as some of the best players around traded baskets and routinely brought fans to their feet.

More than that, though, it has even hosted rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, an event that is typically regarded as one of the very best sporting events in the entire world. The annual college hoops tournament was played at the Memorial Gym in '73, '82, '89 and '93, helping make college basketball one of the staples of the Nashville scene and, of course, the University of Vanderbilt campus. Even though we all know that Vanderbilt is known for its academic prowess, they also can absolutely bring it on the hardwood, which is something that you'll understand loud and clear if you make it out to some of their biggest matchups of the season. There's nothing quite like being in the stands when the game is on the line and the Commodores are digging in, but that's not something that you're going to figure out sitting at home.
