Before Memphis hit Broadway, the concept for the musical was developed by theater producer
George W. George. After productions at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts and TheatreWorks in Mountain
View, California, during the 2003 – 2004 season, the musical was finally staged at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego
in 2008. After its brief run at the La Jolla Playhouse, the musical was staged at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle in early
Memphis began its Broadway previews at the Shubert Theatre in September of 2009, and officially opened on October
19. With Christopher Ashley serving as director and Sergio Trujillo as choreographer, the Broadway production was a hit. The
cast included Chad Kimball as Huey Calhoun and Montego Glover as Felicia Farrell, and a creative team consisting of scenic
designer David Gallo, costume designer Paul Tazewell, and lighting designer Howell Binkley. The Broadway production of Memphis
ended taking home four Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations, Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score.
The show also won Best Musical in the Live Theatre division of the Golden Icon Awards. During the Broadway production of Memphis,
the show was also filmed in high definition by Broadway Worldwide and was screen nationwide from April 28 through May 3, 2011.
