Merriam Theatre History
The Merriam Theatre is a performing arts theater located in Philadelphia, PA. It was constructed
in 1918 on the site of the demolished Horticulture Hall and originally named the Sam S. Schubert Theatre, as it was by the
Schubert Organization. Designed by architect Herbert J. Krapp, the structure is a seven-story building that features a theatre
on the ground floor and offices and classrooms on the other six floors. The building came under the ownership of the Academy
of Music in 1972 and is now owned by the University of the Arts. The building's amenities were modernized in the 1980s and
in 1991 the named was changed to the Merriam Theatre in honor of John W. Merriam, a Philadelphia businessman and member of
the Board of Directors of the University of the Arts. This venue has housed some incredible productions over the years, and
