Maya Arulpragasm is better known as M.I.A., a goddess of the dancehall that's determined to get your hips moving to her music. Blending the native music of Sri Lanka with club beats, hip-hop and more than a few references to traditional alternative hits, she's a left-of-center blend of influences that you're sure to enjoy. Raised in Sri Lanka, Arulpragasm grew up with the music of that culture, but soon gravitated toward dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop. Her first album, Arular, attracted an immediate following, largely because it was so unlike anything else most music critics had heard at the time. Weird samples blended into the songs make her music especially fun to listen to.
MIA seems completely unstoppable on the charts. Rising out of the indie-rock scene, her music has fans among pop listeners as well. Much like Arular, she's still making unique dance music, often with references to other songs here and there: Lyrics to The Modern Lovers' Roadrunner and The Pixies' Where is my Mind? both appear on the album. Don't pass on concert tickets to her shows!
