Raised in Sri Lanka, Arulpragasm grew up with the music of that culture, but soon gravitated toward dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop. Her first album, “Arular,” attracted an immediate following, largely because it was so unlike anything else most music critics had heard at the time. Weird samples blended into the songs make her music especially fun to listen to.

In 2007, M.I.A. released her sophomore album, “Kala.” Much like “Arular,” she’s still making unique dance music, often with references to other songs here and there: Lyrics to The Modern Lovers’ “Roadrunner” and The Pixies’ “Where is my Mind?” both appear on the album.
