Michael Feinstein Background

Michael Feinstein was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, where he started learning how to play the piano at the age of five. His professional lessons ended quickly, however, when his teacher gave up, frustrated that Feinstein wouldn't read the sheets of music she provided. At just five years old, Michael Feinstein was already more comfortable playing the piano by ear than by adhering to the structured rules of sheet music. Feinstein's mother encouraged her son to play piano the way he wanted to, and he continued to pursue music throughout his childhood.

After Feinstein graduated from high school, he gigged at piano bars in Columbus for a couple of years until deciding to take the next big step in his music career and moving to Los Angeles at the age of 20. He was eventually introduced to Ira Gershwin, who decided to hire the aspiring young pianist to catalogue and organize all of his phonograph records. This task became an incredibly lengthy job, taking six years to research, catalogue, and preserve all of the sheet music and recordings that Gershwin had collected over the years. Due to his extensive work with Gershwin, Michael Feinstein became known as one of the most dedicated proponents of the Great American Songbook.

Feinstein's music career also took off in the 1980s, as he became a renowned cabaret singer, a Broadway star, and an acclaimed jazz musician all in one decade. Feinstein has been one of the biggest and most revered names in music for several decades, and whether you know him for his work with the Great American Songbook or for his own solo music career, this is one artist you should definitely see in concert at some point during your life!
