Franti was born in Oakland, California, and grew up in nearby Davis. The basketball star was a netter for the University of San Francisco before seriously considering his love for music as a career. Eventually, the budding musician founded Spearhead in 1994, continuing an on-again, off-again solo career while sending albums like Yell Fire! straight to the top of the Billboard charts. With his unique blend of hip hop with a plethora of other styles, including funk, jazz, folk, reggae and rock, Franti has eclipsed the music scene, cultivating legions of fans along the way.

Michael Franti started his music career in 1986 with The Beatnigs, an industrial punk band. His subsequent project, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, leveraged Franti's collaboration with Tse. He also worked with electronic musicians Mark Pistel and Jack Dangers with jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter. In 1994, he founded the band, Spearhead, with a few studio musicians. Home was their debut release in 1994, drawing from funk and soul music. They also released Chocolate Supa Highway, which utilized hip-hop elements and included reggae flavors. Additionally, the album included guest appearances by Joan Osborne and Stephen Marley. After releasing two albums, the band decided to develop its own record label, Boo Boo Wax and released successive albums under the moniker, Michael Franti & Spearhead. They continued to produce other albums, covering several social justice themes like the death penalty and mass media monopolization as well as corporate globalization.
