Michael Franti Background
Michael Franti was born and raised in Oakland, California by adoptive
parents, Carole Wisti and Charles Franti. Michael had four siblings, one of which was also adopted. He went on to pursue his
education at the University of San Francisco, where he was influenced by a priest to start writing poetry. This newfound love
of poetry helped Franti express his emotions, and once he found a bass at a local pawnshop, he began putting his poetic words
to music. His musical style mixed hip hop, punk, and reggae together, and because of its catchy beats and thoughtful lyrics,
Franti's songs were soon being played on the campus radio station.
In 1986, Franti took his love for music and poetry
to the next level and joined a spoken word band, The Beatnigs. While the band did attract a great deal of local attention,
their EPs and albums didn't make a big splash on the music scene. In 1991, Franti decided to move on from The Beatnigs and
joined The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. This group wrote politically charged lyrics and took strong stances on social
issues, which was something that fueled Franti's poetic mind. Their first album achieved much critical acclaim, and U2 asked
them to be an opening act for their Zoo TV Tour. With each show they performed, they not only garnered new fans, but they
also stirred up debate with their thought-provoking lyrics.
After the dissolution of The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy,
Franti decided to form a new band in 1994 called Spearhead. Instead of continuing with the politically charged music of The
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Spearhead created a more commercial sound, drawing on funk and soul music. Their debut album,
Home (1994), and their second album, Chocolate Supa Highway (1997), became successful in the reggae music scene. After achieving
some notable recognition and critical acclaim, the band decided to split from Capitol Records based on a few differences of
opinion. Instead of singing with another label, they decided to create their own: Boo Boo Wax. However, since Capitol Records
owned the rights to the name "Spearhead", the band had to choose another name, and therefore became known as Michael Franti

music hasn't just played over the radio and through home speakers, but it has also appeared on numerous television shows,
such as HBO's The Wire, CW's Privileged, FX's Rescue Me, Showtime's Weeds, and also on several commercials. Franti's music
is so popular that the Los Angeles Dodgers centerfielder, Shane Victorino, chose the song "Light Up Ya Lighter" as the song
that plays when he steps up to bat. Franti's singles have appeared on music charts around the world, becoming especially popular
in the UK and Australia. Some of his most well known singles include "Say Hey (I Love You)", "Why Oh Why", "The Sound of Sunshine",
"People in tha Middle", "Shake It", and numerous others.

Michael Franti rarely
wears shoes. While following a strict vegan diet, Franti decided to go without shoes for three days. This three-day commitment
turned into a lifestyle, and now Franti walks around barefoot a majority of the time. When he must wear shoes, he slips into
a pair of flip-flops. So when you see Franti walk on stage, don't be surprised if there are no shoes on his feet!
