Did you know gifted singer/songwriter Michael Nesmith has penned songs for such class acts as Linda Rondstadt? Additionally
Nesmith inked the 1968 hit, Different Drum, for the Stone Poneys, and also had two popular singles of his own, Joanne and
Silver Moon. In the post-Monkees era, Nesmith has pursued several other creative projects. He was one of the pioneers of the
beginning of the music video age, developing a Nickelodeon series coined Popclips. This series fueled the inspiration for
the MTV cable channel. And he won the 1981 Grammy for Video of the Year for his song, Elephant Parts. Nesmith's storied career
additionally includes film credits. He has produced several feature films from 1984's Repo Man to Tapeheads of 1988. With
all of his dynamic career successes, Nesmith has added author to his resume as well. He published his debut novel, The Long
Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora, in 1998.
Michael Nesmith grew up in Houston, Texas, with his mother, Bette. In high school, Nesmith participated in the school's
choir and in musicals. Additionally during his high school years, his mother started promoting her invention, a typewriter
correction fluid called Liquid Paper, which became a marketable success! After serving in the U.S. Air Force for two years,
Nesmith attended San Antonio College. It was there where he developed a passion for folk music and began performing and recording
his own material. Nesmith relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s to pursue his passion. A pivotal moment in Nesmith's career
happened in 1965 when he nailed a role on a new TV series about a rock group patterned after the Beatles. The Monkees premiered
in the fall of 1966, and this fictitious band developed a genuine following. The Monkees' popularity soon crossed over to
success on the charts. They landed the No. 1 spot with I'm a Believer and Last Train to Clarksville. The group sold millions
of albums and cultivated millions of fans.
