About Michael Stanley
from the rolling hills of Rocky River Ohio, Michael Stanley would grow up in authentic mid America before heading off to Hiram
College to attain his bachelors. Though he eyed music as a side gig and pursued a traditional degree, he would dabble with
music his whole life and worked with the short lived act Silk while still in college. Signed to ABC Records, Michael's first
break into the music industry would be with Silk when they recorded their debut Smooth As Raw Silk, a marginal success that
nevertheless whetted Michael's appetite for mainstream music fame.
Michael involved himself in the production side of
the music industry, running a record store while furthering his own musical advancement by self recording and fine tuning
his own heartland rock sound. By the early 1970s he was working with some of the most recognizable rockers of the era, including
Bill Szymczyk, David Sanborn, and Joe Walsh, and put out his first two albums as a solo performer that would be the beginning
of the slow but consistent emergence of the Michael Stanley music phenomenon.
Deciding to take on a project bigger than
just himself, Michael would create the Michael Stanley Band, comprised of Tommy Dobeck, Daniel Pecchio, and Jonah Koslen,
a motley assembly of musicians who all had experience working and living in the music industry. They would be local music
sensations, playing the hottest venues Ohio has to offer and becoming regulars at the iconic Richfield Coliseum, the beating
cultural heart of Cleveland's rock music scene. By 1981, the band's success had grown to national proportions with the release
of their album Heartland, which would blow up music charts and invade airwaves across the country. Despite runaway success,
the band decided to officially retire in the mid 1980s, with an epic series of blowout shows before the band broke up to pursue
various music and career paths.
Michael would remain a fixture on the Ohio music scene, forming his next band the Resonators,
who replaced the Michael Stanley Band as foundational figures in the Ohio music scene. Stanley would decide to experiment
in different forms of entertainment, that included a hosting position on Cleveland's PM Magazine, a news show, as well as
regular appearances with fellow Ohio native Drew Carey on his sitcom The Drew Carey Show. Always feeling a call for music,
Michael was soon offered a DJ position for WNCX radio, making him the maestro or classic rock in the greater Cleveland area.
1973 would be the year of Michael Stanley, with the release of his debut solo self titled LP as
well as his followup Friends and Legends. Both would make inroads on the national music scene, charting the US Billboard 200
and featuring frequent play on radio waves across North America. The album would be produced by longtime friend and fellow
musician Bill Szymczyk, and featured a litany of guest performers that included Al Perkins, Paul Harris, Kenny Passarelli,
and Joe Walsh. The album would spawn the hit single "Let's Get eh Show on the Road", amongst "Just Keep Playing Your Radio",
"Roll On", and a cover of the Beatles classic "Help!".
1980 would bring the advent of one of the Michael Stanley Band's
greatest albums, titled Heartland. The album would climb to the #86 on the US Billboard 200, Michael's greatest charting success
to date. The album would reinvigorate the Michael Stanley Band, which had fallen recently on hard times, and birthed such
Michael Stanley classics as "Carolyn", "All I Ever Wanted", "Don't Stop the Music" and "Lover".
Lightning would strike
a second time for the MSB with the release of 1983's You Can't FIght Fashion. Under the guidance of legendary producer Bob
Clearmountain, the album sailed to the #64 position on the US Billboard 200 and became an instant rock classic. The album
would be carried by two memorable singles, the #39 charting "My Town" and the highly addictive and accessible single "Someone
Michael wasn't always focused on a life of playing basketball. While attending university
he would attend Hiram College on a baseball scholarship, flirting with the idea of eschewing music for the possibility of
a shot at the big leagues. Thankfully for Michael Stanley fans everywhere, he chose music.
