About Michael W. Smith
Michael Smith grew up
in the heartland. He lived in West Virginia, where he would develop a love of baseball and piano. His passion for music started
at a young age, while participating in his church's choir. Michael's faith would find him at a very young age, but he would
later struggle in his formative early twenties with alcohol and drug abuse. In 1978, after spending a few years studying,
songwriting, and performing locally, Michael would be convinced to make the big decision so many aspiring musicians had made
before him - to move to Nashville, Tennessee.
Michael's move to Nashville was hard on him, where he would increase his
alcohol and drug consumption. He would later give an interview stating "I really started losing touch when I moved to Nashville…
I felt convicted by God. Every time I'd wake up I knew: This isn't me. But I couldn't change myself." These trying times would
eventually strengthen Michael's faith and help him find the strength to overcome. After reaching the second religious epiphany
of his life, he would join Christian music band Higher Ground on keyboards and vocals. The experience would further strengthen
him, allowing him to leave his previous problems in the past.
By the early 80s Michael had become an accomplished musician,
and local label Meadowgreen Music signed him as a writer. He would compose and write hits that would be propelled to fame
by multiple accomplished artists, including Amy Grant and Kathy Troccoli. Smith would tour with the Grant across America,
eventually making his big break opening for her and recording an album with her brother's label, Reunion Records. Michael
had a slow build up to fame, culminating into one of the biggest Christian Contemporary acts on the map in 1990 and beyond.
Today, he is one of the greatest and most regarded CCM performers in the world.
Smith's early work really gained traction in 1983, with the Grammy nominated The Michael W. Smith Project gaining widespread
acclaim alongside the hit single "Friends". He would follow up with Michael W. Smith 2, The Big Picture, and i 2 (EYE), all
of which would be successful and lead to Michael headlining his own cross country tours.
It wasn't until 1990 with the
release of Go West Young Man that Smith would crossover into the mainstream by way of the single "Place in This World". "Place
in This World" would peak at #6 on the Billboard 100. Michael would experience mainstream success after mainstream success
as he followed up with Change Your World, carried by the hit single "I Will Be Here For You". In 1999, Smith would collaborate
with Jim Brickman to put out the #9 hit "Love of My Life", just as Michael had cemented nearly twenty years as a professional
Smith opened a teen club in Nashville, named Rocketown that contained a dance floor,
indoor skate park, and cafe. The club also provides a venue for acoustic life music from young up and coming performers.
has also put his acting chops to the test in the 2006 film The Second Chance. Michael plays the role of a pastor living in
the inner city.
