Michelle Shocked was born in 1962 in Dallas, Texas as Michelle Johnston. Shocked dropped out of the University of Texas and moved to San Francisco where discovered the punk life the city had to offer. When she moved back to Texas, her mother had her committed to a mental hospital. Shocked was released and while she was helping at the Kerrville Folk Festival she was recorded singing around the campfire and those recordings started her career.
