Opening its doors in October 1968, Michigan International Speedway has been the home of many of the sports most exciting races, including victories by legends like David Pearson, Cale Yarborough and many more. The track has an illustrious history and was designed by Charles Moneypenny, who had also created Daytona International Speedway, home of the Daytona 500. Michigan International Speedway is a 2 mile, D Shaped track that was the brainchild of Lawrence LoPatin, a Detroit developer. The venue thrived from day one, with the great Cale Yarborough winning a thrilling inaugural race. After LoPatin's American Raceway's Inc. went bankrupt, the raceway was owned by racer Roger Penske, who took the venue to new heights in the 1970's with the dream of making Michigan International Speedway one of the premier racing venues in the country. Penske succeeded, thanks to his hard work and financial contributions, adding 100,000 seats to its grandstands and adding new tickets offices, administrative offices and many other capital improvements. Penske added new events to the speedway's lineups and made sure that Michigan International Speedway became the very best for the racers and fans alike.
