The band was founded in the mid-90s by frontman Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley. Their music was an update on the hard, southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Their songs paint portraits of the white trash south without being ironic or condescending about the reality of growing up there. Their attentive writing has earned them praise from listeners and critics alike.
The band undertook the task of writing “Southern Rock Opera,” which was released in 2001. As the title suggests, it was a two-disc, epic rock opera about a young boy growing up in the south. He aspires to be a rock star like the members of Skynyrd—and achieves that dream, though faces a painful downfall. In 2008, the band released a new album, “Brighter than Creation’s Dark.”
