Mixed Martial Arts - MMA History

In the early 1900's several organized MMA tournaments began popping up in parts of Europe and the Pacific Rim. A cult following slowly began to emerge in the United States and by the time the Gracie family brought the Brazilian vale tudo form of mixed martial arts to the United States to form UFC, there was already an existing market ready to flock to MMA events. Vale tudo proved to be a little bit too dangerous and rules were soon implemented to help form the kind of MMA that most spectators are used to today. After UFC I, commentator Howard Rosenberg first used the term "mixed martial arts in his review of the fights. The term gained traction as the website newfullcontact.com published Rosenberg's review and continued using the term as it became one of the earliest promoters and reviewers of the sport. These days MMA events are sold as pay-per-view events on television for those not fortunate enough to attend the contests in person and have sales rivaling big time boxing fights an wrestling exhibitions.

The Experience

For centuries lovers of sport have been drawn to arenas and coliseums to see two incredible athletes face off against one another, battling for supremacy using only their skills, strength, and cunning. Whether it is boxing, wrestling, or mixed martial arts, there is just something primal in human nature that longs to see two top quality competitors battle it out against one another just to prove who is the superior fighter. MMA has taken over in the public consciousness when it comes to fighting and as thrilling as it is to watch these contests on television, it is even better to watch in person. The arena goes dark as each competitor enters the arena surrounded by trainers and hangers-on as their chosen entrance song blares over the sound system. Fans loudly cheer for their favorite fighter as he warms up and the two competitors meet briefly before the start of the fight. Once the bell rings there is a sense of nervous tension in the air as the two gladiators collide and sweat and blood pours out into the air and on the mat. Whether you are a fighter yourself and are able to admire the technical skills of the athletes or are merely an enthralled spectator who can't turn your eyes away from the animalistic clash of two world class athletes you are sure to have a thrilling time at one of these fights.

Fighting - MMA

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, combines fighting styles of both striking and grappling and has gained wide appeal all over the world. Fans of wrestling and judo will marvel at the holds and maneuvers of the fighters while lovers of boxing and kick boxing can appreciate the striking aspect of the sport. With the ability to appeal to so many different style of fight fans is it any wonder that MMA has become one of the most popular sports in the world?

Trivia
