Founded in 1997 by Nick Oliveri, Queens of the Stone Age bassist/singer, Mondo Generator was originally intended to be a solo/side project. The Cocaine Rodeo album was recorded that same year, but shelved until the Southern Lord indie label released it in 2000. The band garnered cult status mainly from the rabid fan base of Queens of the Stone Age. In 2003, the band surfaced with a new LP, A Drug Problem That Never Existed. For this project, Oliveri took on more friends to assume recording roles. Troy Van Leeuwen, Josh Homme, Dave Catching, Molly McGuire and Blag Dahlia collaborated with Oliveri. The LP was released jointly by Ipecac Recordings and Rekords Rekords. The band embarked on a three-month tour of North America and Europe in support of the release. After being let go from Queens of the Stone Age in 2004, Nick Oliveri decided to concentrate solely on his project of Mondo Generator. He recorded an acoustic record, Demolition Day, and launched a European tour with Brant Bjork and Mark Lanegan Band. He additionally recorded an EP with Dave Catching, Molly McGuire and Alfredo Hernandez.
