As the longest-running jazz festival on the planet, the Monterey Jazz Festival
has featured top talents like vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater; bassist and musical director Christian McBride; pianist Benny
Green; drummer Lewis Nash; saxophonist Chris Potter; and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. The festival made its debut in 1958

The Monterey Jazz Festival's roots
date back to the time when Jimmy Lyons, a beloved jazz DJ from San Francisco, witnessed firsthand the success of the inaugural
Newport Jazz Festival of 1954. He returned to Monterey with the hopes of developing something similar on the West Coast. He
collaborated with Ralph J. Gleason, a jazz critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, and worked on persuading city officials
