Montreal Candiens History

The Montreal Canadiens are not only one of the oldest teams in the NHL as one of the Original Six, but they are also the oldest professional hockey team in North America dating all the way back to 1907. Their existence predates that of the NHL which started in 1917 and they are the only team in the league older than the league itself. They are one of the most successful professional sports franchises in North America, having won more Stanley Cup Championships than any other team with an unimaginable 24 titles which accounts for about 25 percent of all Stanley Cup victories. The last Stanley Cup Championship came more than 20 years ago, in 1993, and fans are starving for another despite the Canadiens regularly being one of the top teams in the Atlantic Division. In recent years the Habs have been on the rise again and are looking to make a deep run in the NHL playoffs in 2014

The Team

The Montreal Canadiens are on the precipice of another impressive run through the Eastern Conference playoffs that may just end up with them finding a spot in the Finals playing for a Stanley Cup Once again. The Canadiens will be tough to beat in the back with assistant captains Josh Gorges and Andrei Markov anchoring the D. Max Pacioretty and Brian Gionta will be providing firepower up front for head coach Michel Therrien who will be designing perfect plays and lines to get the Canadiens to the Promised Land. The team currently sits just a few points behind the Boston Bruins in the Atlantic Division and if they can muster up the strength for a strong finish they just might finish on top and have a great seed heading into the playoffs meaning they can play the majority of their games on their home ice at Bell Centre. Be sure to be there down the stretch and during the playoff run with tickets courtesy of StubHub.

The Experience

Hockey fans in general are some of the most passionate sports fans around, but nothing quite matches the fanaticism surrounding the NHL playoffs and fans of the Montreal Canadiens are some of the most dedicated and vociferous fans in the entire NHL. On game day at Bell Centre the fans file in and take their seats and that is when the cheering and chanting begins. As the clock winds down closer and closer to the dropping of the puck the crowd works itself into a frenzy. Finally both teams are ready for face off and the excitement really begins. Thunderous, bone rattling hits, incredible displays of speed and agility, powerful slapshots, and tremendous saves set the arena on fire for the following three periods of world class college hockey. By the time the final buzzer sounds your voice is hoarse and your palms are stinging from clapping and giving high fives and you will already be planning a return trip. Everything is ratcheted up a notch during the NHL playoffs and the further teams advance the more intense the competition becomes. If you thought regular season NHL games were exciting, just wait until you experience an NHL playoff game live and in person.

NHL Eastern Conference Atlantic Division

The Atlantic Division is comprised of eight teams: the Boston Bruins, the Buffalo Sabres, the Detroit Red Wings, the Florida Panthers, the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Many of the teams in the division are among the top franchises in the history of the NHL including the Montreal Canadiens who have won 24 Stanley Cup Championships. The Boston Bruins are the most recent current member of the division to have won a Stanley Cup, having done so in 2010. The Atlantic Division is in some ways new to the NHL after the 2013 realignment when the former Atlantic Division was renamed the Northeast Division and the current Atlantic Division was created out of teams the Northeast Division, the Southeast Division, and the Central Division. From the 2013-2014 season on look for the newly reconstructed Atlantic Division to be one of the premiere divisions not only in the Eastern Conference but in the entire NHL.

Former Canadiens right winger Guy Lafleur holds the team record for points with 1,246 and assists with 728. Another former right winger Maurice Richard holds the team record for goals with 544. The team has retired 16 numbers, the most recent being Patrick Roy's number 33 which was retired in 2008 after he played goalie for the team from 1985 through 1995. The team is often referred to as the Habs which is short for one of their French nicknames, Les Habitants and is also the reason for the letter H in the center of the C in the team's logo. Other French nicknames for the team include Les Canadiens, Le Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, La Sainte-Flanelle, Le Tricolore, Les Glorieux, Le CH and Le Grand Club.
