The musical career of Morris Day started when he formed a band with Prince and Andre Cymone during high school. The band was managed by Day's mother and changed names a couple of times. It initially was Grand Central and later known as Champagne. When Prince set out on his early career and later asked Morris Day to front the band The Time. In 1981, Prince had initiated forming the band The Time during his contract with Warner Brothers, as it contained a clause that enabled him to recruit and produce artists. The band was formed in Minneapolis and released four albums that were performed by both Prince and Morris Day. The music was cohesion of rock and funk that one could hear influences of Parliament, Sly and James Brown. The Time released the following five albums: The Time, What Time Is It?, Ice Cream Castle, Pandemonium and Condensate. During his solo career his released the following albums: Color of Success, Daydreaming, Guaranteed and It's About Time. In an interview with Morris Day, he recalls making music in the early days, "It's all about the music first. Our music was made to be re-created because it was put down with all the real instruments. That's our forte, being able to re-create the music. The grooves are going to be there—live, no samples—and me and the fellas are gonna be in the pimp suits, so it'll look good and sound good."

Breakthrough Morris Day

While Morris Day was able to breakout for a solo career, it was his period playing with The Time that gave him a boost. The Time toured with Prince and became recognizable during 1984. What helped to bring Morris Day to light was playing the antagonist to Prince in the films Graffiti Bridge and Purple Rain. The character that Morris Day played was taken to his performances on stage with The Time to help capitalize on the interest that the film started. The Time is best known for the songs "Jungle Love" and "The Bird." As the band found its breakthrough in 1984, it also found its dissolution. In the same year, Morris Day released his solo debut album. The album was entitled Color of Success and included the songs "The Oak Tree" and "Don't Wait for Me." While it did little to become a commercial success, his following album Guaranteed did. In the 1990s, The Time reunited for a fourth album called Pandemonium that released a number 1 single called "Jerk Out." As time progressed, The Time and Morris Day found the limelight was fading and took a hiatus. It was during the new millennium that Morris Day took to the stage again from retirement. He has participated in various activities over the years and even performed with The Time after 18 years with Rihanna during the 50th Grammy Awards show.
