Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwayne are actually not related. They picked the name Mumford and Sons because Marcus was the most pronounced member of the group, and they were drawn to the old-timey ring of the name. The band's name has certainly resonated with fans, and it is currently one of the most popular indie acts to have crossed over the pond in quite a while.
Originating in December 2007, Mumford and Sons is comprised of multi-instrumentalists who at any given time play keyboard, guitar, drums, bass guitar and traditional folk instruments such as banjo, resonator guitar and mandolin. Similar bands were popping up in the West London community around the same time, elevating the term, West London folk scene. Mumford and Sons were being compared to Johnny Flynn, Laura Marling and Noah and the Whale. Throughout 2008 and stepping into 2009, Mumford and Sons played gigs in small clubs to moderate venues throughout the U.K. and the U.S. Love Your Ground tracks were touted to audiences along with other original material that would eventually become Sigh No More.
Sigh No More, Mumford and Sons' debut release, has turned them into household names. Tracks like Little Lion Man and The Cave have become fan faves. The band has toured extensively to support this album as well as their other material. In April 2011, the participated in the Old Crow Medicine Show and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros on the Railroad Revival Tour. This tour was influenced by the Festival Express tour spanning Canada in 1970 that featured legends The Band, The Grateful Dead, Buddy Guy and Janis Joplin. The three bands performed at six outdoor sites, journeying solely in vintage rail cars. The authentic experience inspired the bands to write songs during this incredible railroad odyssey. Mumford and Sons also went on to play the Glastonbury Festival in June 2011 and then launched a North American tour.
