        Singer, songwriter and musician Marvin Gaye helped carve the sound of Motown Records in the 1960s with a string of smash hits, including I Heard It Through the Grapevine, How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) and duets with Mary Wells and Tammi Terrell, later garnering the monikers of Prince of Soul and Prince of Motown. In the 1970s, Gaye recorded What's Going On and Let's Get It On and became among the initial artists in Motown to sever ties with its production company. In 1982, Gaye released the Grammy Award winner, Sexual Healing. Following his death in 1984, his life and contributions were celebrated by many institutions including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
