Natalie Cole Background

With such musical parents, it's no surprise that Natalie Cole was born with music in her genes. As the daughter of famed crooner Nat King Cole and Maria Hawkins Ellington, a former Duke Ellington Orchestra singer, Natalie Cole spent her child surrounded by music. From the moment she was born, she was exposed to some of the best singers in jazz and blues, and even sang on her father's Christmas album when she was just six years old.

With such undeniable talent and some of the best-known musicians in the world as her parents, Natalie Cole transitioned seamlessly into the music world. She started performing when she was 11 years old, but for Natalie, education was always important. When her father died when she was 15, Natalie went to Northfield Mount Hermon Preparatory School in New England and eventually ended up at the University of Massachusetts, earning a degree in Child Psychology and a minor in German.

Despite her impressive education, after she graduated college, Cole knew that she wanted to pursue music. She formed a band called Black Magic, and they began singing R&B and rock tracks at small clubs in the area. After hearing her demos, Capitol Records, the label that signed her father, decided to keep the business in the family and signed Natalie as well. With producers Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy by her side, Natalie recorded her debut album, Inseparable. Cole became an instant hit, with her first album becoming so critically and commercially successful that it even earned her a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

After her immediate rise to stardom, Natalie Cole continued to crank out incredible songs with her powerful voice. Natalie Cole is definitely her father's daughter—they both have the incredible musical talent that most artists only dream of having. Her talent and hard work has earned her numerous awards and honors, such as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, nine Grammy Awards out of 21 nominations, several American Music Awards, and the Hitmaker Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

This acclaimed and beloved artist is ready to bring her hit songs to a stage near you, so make sure you grab your Natalie Cole tickets on StubHub right away!
