Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Schedule in 2014

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are ready to lay it all on the line this season in their quest for victories on the football field. The team has a lot of talent on the roster in 2014, and the program is hoping that such a talent level can result on some huge wins on their home field this season. The Huskers have a home schedule jam-packed with intriguing matchups that fans are going to want to see in person in what should prove to be another thrilling season of Nebraska football.

The Huskers have a tough matchup coming their way on September 27th when the Illinois Fighting Illini hit the field at Memorial Stadium to do battle. The Illini always have a tough team that features some dynamic playmakers, and this season should prove to be no different. Head coach Bo Pelini will have to come up with a great defensive scheme for this game, and execution will be key for this Nebraska squad. A win against a Big Ten opponent like Illinois will be a huge boost for this team.

Nebraska will close out their season at home with a matchup with the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 2014. The Gophers look to have a formidable unit this season, and the Huskers certainly will want to finish things strong this regular season as they eye a potential bowl game berth. This should be a fantastic game to catch in person.

Nebraska Cornhuskers Football History

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are one of the most prolific college football teams in the entire NCAA, creating a legacy that has outlasted the changing decades in Division I football. The Huskers have accumulated 43 conference championship titles in a little over a century, amassing five national titles along the way. The Nebraska football team claimed the national championship title in 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995 and 1997, with their wins in the '90s under head coach Tom Osborne marking the first time since the '40s, when Notre Dame took home three national titles in 1946-49, that a team has won three national titles in four years. The Nebraska football team is also 24-25 in bowl games, winning the 2013 Capital One Bowl over Georgia, 2012 Capital One Bowl over South Carolina and 2010 Holiday Bowl over Washington.

It's no surprise that an NCAA team as prominent as the Nebraska Cornhuskers would yield some incredible talent in the NFL, and that has certainly been the case for Nebraska alumni. The Cornhuskers have three players that have gone on to be NFL Hall of Famers, including Willis Roy (Link) Lyman, Guy Chamberlin and Bob (Boomer) Brown. There are several Cornhuskers that have gone on to play in the NFL after their tenure with the Nebraska football team, including current players like Prince Amukamara, Zack Bowman, Lavonte David, Brandon Jackson, Ndamukong Suh, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Demorrio Williams, to name a few. It's almost surprising that there are only three Nebraska players that have had their numbers retired, including No. 20 Johnny Rodgers, No. 60 Tom Novak and No. 64 Bob Brown.

Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Conference

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are one of the most decorated college teams in the country, snagging 43 conference titles to date. Now a part of the Midwestern powerhouse known as the Big Ten Conference, the Cornhuskers have also played in the Big 12, Big 6/7/8, MVIAA and WIUFA since the turn of the century. The Huskers have been part of the Big Ten since 2010, making a name for themselves quickly in the conference. With the Iowa Hawkeyes as their biggest rival in the Big Ten, the Cornhuskers are a popular team and are often the team to beat in the conference year after year. Big Ten football has received a change-up with the arrival of Maryland and Rutgers in 2014, putting a new target on the Huskers backs as the Big Ten sees some big changes in the roster.

Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Rivalries

As part of the Big Ten Conference, it's no surprise that some of the biggest rivalries for the Nebraska Cornhuskers come out of the Big Ten. The Iowa Hawkeyes are the biggest rival for the Cornhuskers, although the team also sees fierce competition build up between other Big Ten rivals like the Purdue Boilermakers, Illinois Fighting Illini, Minnesota Golden Gophers and Wisconsin Badgers. The Cornhuskers and Hawkeyes have a big rivalry going for the Heroes Trophy, which is a traveling trophy passed between Iowa and Nebraska when the two teams play each other every season. Nebraska leads in wins for Heroes Trophy play at 28-12-3, although the two teams have battled each other on the turf since 1891, when the Hawkeyes beat the Cornhuskers for the first time.
