Neko Case Background
Hailing from Alexandria, Virginia, Neko Case
bounced around as a child, spending the most significant amount of time in Tacoma, Washington. At 15 years of age, she left
her parents, and by the time she turned adult age, she began drumming for multiple bands on the Northwest's punk rock music
scene. She relocated to Vancouver in 1994 to go to art school. At the same time, she became a part of the punk group, Maow.
She also gigged with the Weasles and later on founded her own backing band, the Boyfriends, which originally included alumni
of the Zumpano, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet and the Softies.
The Virginian arrived in 1997, which was Case's first
solo album. The album showcased traditional country and included a blend of originals and covers. She went on to collaborate
with Carolyn Mark on the Corn Sisters project and also started a longstanding relationship with the New Pornographers. After
she completed her education in 1998, Case went back to Washington and went to work on her sophomore solo album. The Furnace
Room Lullaby arrived in 2000 and garnered high praise for its melancholy compositions.
Case moved to the Windy City
and issued the Canadian Amp EP in 2001. Its temperamental, late-night tone crossed over to 2002's Blacklisted, a dimmer yet
more assorted affair. Case received strong reviews for Blacklisted, scoring spots on many of the year-end critics' polls and
garnering her a tour spot opening for Nick Cave. In 2004, she inked a deal with Anti Records in the U.S. and issued a live
album, The Tigers Have Spoken, which was cut during several shows with the Sadies - a surf-country band. Case went back into
the studio to record Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. The album fared pretty well on the Billboard charts. It landed at No.
54, with her work exposed to a broader audience. Live from Austin, TX came out a year later. The album illuminated a 2003
Austin City Limits performance. Case lent her vocals to the New Pornographers' project, Challengers, before going back to
Tucson, Arizona, which was her adopted hometown. Case began work on her new album in Tucson, as well as Brooklyn, Toronto
and Vermont. Middle Cyclone arrived several months later in the spring of 2009. The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight,
The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You came out in 2013.
