New Edition Background
school, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, and Ricky Bell had been close friends. In 1978, the three friends got together with two
other friends from Orchard Park housing projects in Boston, Travis Pettus and Corey Rackley. This charismatic and talented
young group started singing and dancing together, eventually entering talent shows around town. After showcasing their strong
vocals and magnetic performing energy, Brooke Payne, a Boston-based manager, sought them out. He instantly recognized the
star quality of the young five boys, so he decided to name them New Edition because they sounded like a more hip and new edition
of the Jackson 5.
Over the next couple of years, both Rackley and Pettus left the group and were replaced by Ronnie
DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant. Unfortunately for Rackley and Pettus, leaving New Edition wasn't a smart move, since the group finally
got their big break in 1982 after performing at the Hollywood Talent Night at a local Boston theater. Although the group placed
in second at the competition, and therefore didn't receive the promised first-place gift of a recording contract, a well-known
producer Maurice Starr decided to invite the group to his studio to record an album. Produced by Starr, their debut album
Candy Girl became a smash hit, with its hit single "Candy Girl" topping both the American R&B chart and the UK singles
Despite the massive success of their first album and their first major tour, the boys returned to the projects
in Boston with paychecks totaling just under $2, and were told that the high cost of touring was the reason they earned no
more. The members of New Edition felt cheated, and successfully sued Starr and his Streetwise Records so that they could land
a much bigger, more lucrative recording deal with MCA Records. That same year that the band signed with MCA, they released
their self-titled second album, which flew off of shelves in record stores, eventually becoming certified as double platinum
in the U.S.
The band entered a period of great success, with sold out worldwide tours and hit song after hit song. In
1986, however, the group hit a speed bump, and voted Bobby Brown out of the band because of his difficult behavior. Brown
went on to pursue a very successful solo career, while Johnny Gill stepped in to take his place. Several years later, the
band went on a hiatus to pursue their own solo projects. And now, you can see the group back together as they get ready to
perform at a venue near you. Buy your tickets on StubHub today to avoid missing out on seeing this legendary band perform
