Soccer lovers and fans of Major League Soccer know that the New England Revolution are among the top teams in the league as far as both success and fan support. Soccer has been on the rise in the United States for the past few decades and the level of skill and fan enthusiasm in the MLS is evidence of just how far the sport has come in the country. The beautiful game still has a long way to go in the United States to catch up with the popularity it has achieved everywhere else in the world but those in the country who follow it are among the most dedicated and passionate fans in all of sports and nowhere is this more true than in New England.

The Revolution are currently locked in a heated battle at the top of the standings in the Eastern Conference of the MLS, sitting just a few points behind DC United who currently hold the top spot in the conference. There are still two regular season home games for the Revolution to score some big wins in hopes of moving up the standings before the playoffs. The first game is on October 4th against the Columbus Crew. The Crew are currently just a few points ahead of New England for second place in the conference and this game could have major implications for seeding in the playoffs. The final home game of the regular season will be on October 25th when the Toronto FC comes to town. This will be your last chance to cheer on the Revolution and provide them with some momentum heading into the postseason and is sure to be a thrilling game.

New England Revolution Major League Soccer

The New England Revolution play in the MLS, or Major League Soccer, which is the premiere soccer league in the United States and Canada and is also a member of CONCACAF. Nineteen teams in the league compete during the regular season which begins each March hoping to earn a spot in the postseason. Each team plays thirty four regular season games with the regular season champion being awarded the Supporters' Shield. The top ten teams advance to the playoffs with the last two teams playing in the MLS Cup in December. The first season of the MLS was in 1996 with ten charter members of which the Columbus Crew was one. Plans for establishing the league began as far back as 1988 when U.S. Soccer made an agreement with FIFA to have plans to get a Division I professional soccer league in place in order to be allowed to host the 1994 World Cup. The league is granted a spot for three American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League while another team has the chance to qualify via the U.S. Open Cup. Year after year MLS gains more fans and it stands as one of the five major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.

New England Revolution Rivalries

As with most other sports that have teams in the New England and New York area the main rival of the New England Revolution is the New York Red Bulls. Following in the tradition of the Celtics and the Knicks and the Red Sox and Yankees, the Revolution and Red Bulls have some of the most fiercely fought games in the entire MLS and the games seem to take on a whole new meaning when the two teams step on the pitch. The New England Revolution and the Chicago Fire also have a bitter rivalry after meeting each other several times both in the regular season and in the playoffs. Hard feelings still remain between the two sides even as players and coaches have changed and when the two sides face off against one another on the pitch you can be sure that the intensity of the competition will be high.

The Experience

There are few events as exciting as seeing one top notch soccer team compete at home against another. The players in the MLS have grown up playing the sport that they love and are out there s much to advance the popularity of the sport in the United States. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and gives birth to the most fervent and dedicated fans. One step into a stadium when the local national team is playing and you will understand what all of the fuss is about. Unrelenting action, otherworldly footwork, stunning slide tackles, and mind blowing, acrobatic saves by goalkeepers will have you seeing exactly why soccer is referred to as "the beautiful game." You will be chanting and singing along and barely even need to use your seat as move after move will have you jumping up and cheering for the home team. By the time the referee blows the final whistle you will be anxiously awaiting the next opportunity to attend a New England Revolution game and will find yourself an MLS and soccer fan for life.

Trivia

The club badge for the New England Revolution is based on the colors of the American flag with the stars taking on the shape of soccer balls and is based on the 1994 World Cup logo.
