Few NFL franchises own their history the way the New York Giants do. Tim Mara paid $2,500 for an NFL franchise in 1925. Four other teams joined the league that year, and the Giants are the only one of the five still in existence, as well as the NFL's longest-established team in the Northeastern United States. To stand apart from the baseball Giants of the era, the franchise legally became the New York Football Giants in 1937, a name fans and broadcasters still use today. The Giants now play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, a building they share with the New York Jets, and the appetite for Giants tickets has spanned generations, from the Polo Grounds to the Meadowlands.
The trophy case is loaded. The Giants have won eight NFL championships: four from before the Super Bowl era (1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956) and four Super Bowls (XXI, XXV, XLII, and XLVI). Their 19 championship game appearances are the most of any franchise, and only the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears have won more titles. The milestones stack up across a century: the 1934 "Sneakers Game" win over the Bears on an icy Polo Grounds field, the 1958 overtime championship loss to the Colts often called "the Greatest Game Ever Played," Super Bowl wins under Bill Parcells after the 1986 and 1990 seasons, and two more titles under Tom Coughlin, with Eli Manning beating the New England Patriots in both. Twenty-nine Giants are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the second-most of any team, and the 1956 champions were coached by a staff that included Vince Lombardi on offense and Tom Landry on defense.
Home games at MetLife Stadium put one of the NFL's most established fan bases on full display. The building sits in the Meadowlands Sports Complex about five miles west of New York City and has hosted its own piece of history, including Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014. For anyone holding Giants tickets, the NFC East schedule sets the tone: the rivalry with the Philadelphia Eagles dates to 1933 and is the oldest in the division, while games against the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders carry decades of history of their own. The building fills with blue jerseys and old NFC East grudges every fall, the way Giants crowds have filled every home the franchise has known, from the Polo Grounds to Giants Stadium to MetLife.
