The orchestra was first founded by the American conductor Ureli Corelli Hill, with the help of the Irish composer William Vincent Wallace.


Based in New York City, the New York Philharmonic first got started in 1842, and is often called the "Big Five." It is performed at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. The group gave its first concert in December 1842, attracting an audience of 600 people. The three-hour show consisted of chamber music and a string of operatic songs.
