New York Rangers Playoff Tickets

New York Rangers Playoff tickets

New York Rangers History

The New York Rangers are one of the most popular franchises in the NHL and came into formation in 1926 and joined the NHL as one of the Original Six franchises the following year. They have won four Stanley Cup Championships, in 1928, 1933, 1940, and 1994. The team first was brought about to compete with the New York Americans who had played in Madison Square Garden in 1925 and were so popular that the arena wanted another team to play within its walls. The president of Madison Square Garden, George Lewis "Tex" Rickard, was given a hockey team which was at first called Tex's Rangers before being renamed the New York Rangers upon joining the NHL. Despite early success, the Rangers struggled towards the end of the Original Six era before becoming a force in the Seventies when they made the Stanley Cup Finals twice but lost both times. Rangers fans were jubilant in 1994 when the franchise won its first championship in 54 years. The way the Rangers have been playing in recent seasons it appears that New York fans will not have to wait nearly as long before their favorite team hoists the Stanley Cup once again.

About the Team

The New York Rangers currently sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division and although it appears unlikely that they can catch the Pittsburgh Penguins who sit atop the division, they are in a heated battle with the Philadelphia Flyers, the Washington Capitals, the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the New Jersey Devils to see who will finish second in the division. All season the Rangers have boasted a formidable defense and they are in the top ten in the NHL in both goals against average and penalty killing. Goalie Cam Talbot has had a stellar year with a goals against average hovering around 1.75 and with the importance of goalies in the NHL Playoffs, he could be the key to a deep run for the Rangers this season. He will have help from assistant captains, defensemen Dan Girardi and Marc Staal who always put forth a good effort to make sure he does not get peppered with shots. Center Brad Richards leads the team with points and, along with leading goal scorer Rick Nash and leading assist man Derek Stepan, should be the center of a strong offensive unit for the Rangers. As the season winds down, the New York Rangers will be looking to pile up wins and remain ahead of the Flyers, the Caps, the Devila, and the Blue Jackets all of whom are nipping at their heels. A strong finish to the regular season could really help the Rangers in the playoffs, giving them plenty of games on their home ice in front of their dedicated fans who can help cheer them to wins and guide them to a deep playoff run. The Experience

Hockey fans in general are some of the most passionate sports fans around, but nothing quite matches the fanaticism surrounding the NHL playoffs and fans of the New York Rangers are some of the most dedicated and vociferous fans in the entire NHL. On game day at Madison Square Garden the fans file in and take their seats and that is when the cheering and chanting begins. As the clock winds down closer and closer to the dropping of the puck the crowd works itself into a frenzy. Finally both teams are ready for face off and the excitement really begins. Thunderous, bone rattling hits, incredible displays of speed and agility, powerful slapshots, and tremendous saves set the arena on fire for the following three periods of world class college hockey. By the time the final buzzer sounds your voice is hoarse and your palms are stinging from clapping and giving high fives and you will already be planning a return trip. Everything is ratcheted up a notch during the NHL playoffs and the further teams advance the more intense the competition becomes. If you thought regular season NHL games were exciting, just wait until you experience an NHL playoff game live and in person.

NHL Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division

The Metropolitan Division is comprised of eight teams: the Carolina Hurricanes, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the New Jersey Devils, the New York Islanders, the New York Rangers, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Washington Capitals. Many of the teams in the division are among the top franchises in the history of the NHL and four of the eight teams are located in either New York City area or in Pennsylvania. The 2013-2014 season is the first for the Metropolitan Division which was formed due to the realignment of the NHL. The majority of the teams came to the Metropolitan Division from the Atlantic Division, including the New Jersey Devils, the New York Islanders, the New York Rangers, the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Meanwhile the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes came from the Southeast Division and the Columbus Blue Jackets joined from the Central Division. It is home to some of the biggest rivalries in the league including that between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals and the one between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders. The Metropolitan Division is currently the only division in the NHL without a Canadian Team.

Trivia

The New York Rangers have retired nine numbers, those of Eddie Giacomin, Brian Leetch, Harry Howell, Rod Gilbert, Andy Bathgate, Adam Graves, Mark Messier, Mike Richter, and Wayne Gretzky. The number 9 has actually been retired twice, as it was worn by both Andy Bathgate and Adam Graves. The popular and successful Rangers teams of the Twenties and Thirties became celebrities and celebrated the New York nightlife of the time earning the nickname the Broadway Blueshirts which still sticks with the team to this day. The 1996-1997 New York Rangers reunited former Edmonton Oilers teammates Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier who had won the Stanley Cup together as Oilers but failed to do so again in their only season together.
