About Night Ranger
Brad Gillis, a former guitar player for Ozzy Ozbourne, and
Alan Fitzgerald, a keyboardist who used to be in Montrose, would come together to found Night Ranger in 1981 in the city of
San Francisco, along with Kelly Keagy on drums, Jeff Watson on guitar, and Jack Blades on bass and vocals. Keagy, Gillis,
and Blades had all previously been members of the funk/pop group Rubicon. This quintet would become one of the best-known
hard rock outfits in mainstream music in the 'eighties.
Originally calling themselves The Rangers, they would change
their name after a country band of the same name claimed the metal group was in danger of copyright infringement. After just
a few local performances, Bill Graham, Night Ranger's promoter, would manage to secure Night Ranger with supporting gigs for
performances with the Doobie Brothers, Santana, Ozzy Osbourne, ZZ Top, and Judas Priest. The band's debut album, Dawn Patrol,
would be released on Boardwalk Records and would come out in 1982 – only a year after their formation. In 1983 Night
Ranger would release Midnight Madness to great success. In 1985 the band would release 7 Wishes, another smashing hit. 7 Wishes
would be followed by Big Life in 1987, and this album would herald the wane of Night Ranger. Keyboardist Fitzgerald would
leave Night Ranger in 1988. The band's last album would be Man in Motion, released that same year, and would be their first
album to fall short of platinum, selling about 800,000 copies. This final release would not feature any Top 40 hits, nor would
it be meet Night Ranger's expectations. Night Ranger read the writing on the wall, and would break up in 1989.
Blades would continue to pursue his musical career, and would become a part of a supergroup of rockers to form Damn Yankees.
The group also features famous musicians Tommy Shaw and Ted Nugent. In 1998, Night Ranger would reunite to record and release
the album Seven.
The band's debut album, Dawn Patrol, would come out in 1982 and would rise
to a notable thirty-eight on charts in the U.S. Next year's album, Midnight Madness, would however be the release that established
Night Ranger as a major commercial competitor. The track "(You Can Still) Rock in America" would be a smashing AOR hit, due
in part to Night Ranger's sensitivity to a patriotic trend in the rock of the 1980s. The "Sister Christian" single would rise
to number five on the charts, and become possibly the band's best known hit. Overall, Midnight Madness would sell more than
one million copies and would rise to number fifteen. Their 1985 release, 7 Wishes, would be another indubitable success and
would rise to a record number ten. 7 Wishes, Midnight Madness, and Dawn Patrol would all be certified platinum and would earn
Night Rangers an international following. Cumulatively, Night Ranger's first five releases would sell more than ten million
copies around the world.
Night Ranger is big in Japan. Despite the fact that guitarist Jeff Watson
and keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald have left the group, the band has continued to tour and a good third of their touring schedule
is located in Asian countries – Japan especially.
